Later that night, Sarah and Emily picked me up so we could ride to the game together. Both girls were decked out in green and white Ridgway Demon t-shirts. Sarah had woven a glittering gold ribbon through her emerald green braid. Assorted noisemakers and pompoms laid on the backseat.
“Hey girls, thanks for the ride,” I said.
“Cool cabin,” Emily said. “Mr. Meyer has a great spot out here.”
“Yeah, I’ve become attached to the cabin already, aside from the fact it’s buried so deep in the forest I keep waiting for the three bears to show up looking for porridge.”
“No way, they’re all hibernating by now,” Emily said. “But you can bet those three bears will show up in the spring, and they won’t be looking for porridge. Watch out for Quazimodo.”
“I plan on it. I don’t want him tangling with any bears no matter how tough he thinks he is. What’s with all the stuff in the back?” I asked.
“Sarah likes to make noise so she can draw attention to herself,” Emily said with a smirk.
“Hey, what’s wrong with a little school spirit? I want everyone to know I’m enthusiastic about my boys—especially one in particular.” Sarah raised her eyebrows provocatively. “Besides, basketball games give me the perfect opportunity to scream my head off in a socially acceptable way.”
“Since when did you ever care about being socially acceptable?” Emily asked.
“Quit your hating, Emily. You know you love me,” Sarah said.
“Should I grab a suitcase so we can lug all this stuff into the gym, Sarah?” I teased.
“Hey! I thought you were on my side, Eve. What a couple of party poopers!”
We bantered back and forth on the way to the high school as if we’d been friends for years. Three average American girls headed to a high school basketball game. It felt so ordinary that I managed to escape the whole alien identity thing for a time. But when we pulled into the parking lot, I experienced the first of several reality checks I’d receive before the night was over.
Since it was nearly Thanksgiving, the sun disappeared behind the mountains before six o’clock. The dark, cloudless sky sparkled with thousands of stars, and a bright moon bathed the school in cold winter light. Thirty minutes before game time and forty or fifty cars filled the blacktop. I heard a car door slam as we got out but didn’t see anyone nearby.
Stop it! Let go of me! Desperate words burst into my head. One of the colonists had transmitted a telepathic plea for help. Recognizing the obnoxious voice immediately, I gasped and spun around, scanning the cars for Tara.
“What is it? What are you looking for?” Emily asked.
“Uh, I don’t know. I thought I heard someone yell,” I said. Geesh, I needed a few ready excuses for when I screwed up the telepathy thing. I searched between the rows of cars with the girls following close behind.
Voices erupted near the edge of the parking lot. Tara and Mack were arguing. I ducked out of sight and motioned for the girls to do the same.
